A New Allergy Medication Option for Dogs

A New Allergy Medication Option for Dogs

Excessive licking, chewing, biting, or scratching? Excessive rolling, rubbing, or scooting? Paw chewing, hair loss, recurrent ear problems, or changes in the skin, including sores, darkened color, or redness? If your dog is suffering from any of these symptoms, chances are they may be suffering from allergies.

Unlike their human companions who get the watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose with allergy season, the dog population shows their allergies differently. And with these symptoms comes a house full of suffering pets and pet owners.

But there is a fast acting, safe, and effective long term use treatment option. APOQUEL (oclacitinib tablet) is a different kind of prescription drug. It works to block allergic itch at the source to give your dog fast relief, regardless of the type of allergy.

APOQUEL works FAST

Within 4 hours of the first dose, your dog will begin noticing results. These results will last a full 24 hours; so there is no need to re-dose multiple times throughout the day.

APOQUEL is SAFE

In studies, side effects from APOQUEL were mild and similar to those seen with placebo (sugar pills). The most common side effects were vomiting and diarrhea. Those occurred in only a small percentage of dogs treated with APOQUEL. These side effects usually stopped on their own. With APOQUEL, your dog is less likely to suffer from the kinds of side effects often seen with steroids (another kind of drug treatment option). These include excessive drinking and urinating, panting, and weight gain.

APOQUEL works LONG TERM

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not placed any time restrictions on the use of APOQUEL. This means you can treat your dog with APOQUEL for as long as it takes to appropriately treat your dog. In studies, dogs treated with APOQUEL for over 2 years showed minimal side effects.

How to give APOQUEL

APOQUEL can be given twice daily, for up to 14 days if your dogs symptoms are severe. After 14 days, you will need to give it only once daily. APOQUEL can be given with or without food, making it easy and convenient for both you and your best friend.

If your dog is suffering with allergies, both seasonal and year long, be sure to ask about APOQUEL at your next visit to Delavan Lakes Veterinary Clinic. Your dog doesn’t have to suffer any longer, and neither does your household. For more about APOQUEL, including stories from pet owners, go to their website or contact us today.
